Tarkwa Bay Eviction: Naval Officers Render Over 10,000 Homeless,

Naval officers have forcefully thrown residents of Tarkwa Bay out of their abode in Lagos, on Tuesday.

According to reports,  about 10,000 residents, were said to have been sent out of their homes in the latest mass-eviction, in order to address the issue of vandalism in the area

Reports from AFP revealed that, the eviction occurred in order to stop the looting of nearby oil pipelines.

Another reason for the eviction, according to the Nigerian navy; was to protect equipment belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) from vandals.

Commander Thomas Otuji, the spokesperson for the operation said, “They build houses on pipelines and pump illegally,”  “All the people in the community aren’t vandals but if you don’t report it, you are part of it.”

A victim of the eviction exercise, Mrs Minda stated that members of the community left the scene of the eviction during the exercise.

In her words, “Soldiers have been in and out since the morning, shooting, and telling us to pack, pack, pack. They gave us one hour,” she said. “Nobody to help us carry, no cars. I have nowhere else to go to.”
